Water Therapy |
| |
|
We are all used to drinking 8 - 10 glasses of water a day |
Well, this is pretty much a calculated amount. Those 8-10 glasses are what a person on a typical day loses through
activity. So those glasses of water are just to maintain your body's ideal hydration.
Though this 8-10 glasses may vary since different people have different routines. Some may be more physically
active or are situated in warmer or colder climates.
A popular therapy nowadays concerning water intake is water therapy. It can be traced back to Chinese and Indian
medicine. It involves taking in a litre to a litre and a half of water or even more in an effort to cleanse the
body.
The Good
Now taking in a litre of water a day is practically harmless. It even helps in flushing out toxins. Healthy water
intakes can even help flush out small kidney stones and other harmful mineral build ups in the body.
It prevents dehydration
It has 0 calories for you calorie-conscious!
Depending on your climate or physical work you might need more than the proverbial 8 glasses of water.
Water prevents the development of kidney stones.
It also prevents dehydration and guards against, headaches, fatigue, and lack of mental awareness.
Older people (around 65) should make it a habit to drink enough water. At that age, the sense of thirst may not be
as strong leading to dehydration.
Mineral water has some good minerals in them. But if you're on a low-salt diet, better check if your mineral water
contains it. Some of them do.
Try to create a hydration schedule. Just distribute your eight (or more glasses) along the day.
The Bad
One possible danger of water therapy is the unregulated intake of water. Our body has a natural mechanism of
getting rid of excess water. If you take in more water than you could get out, then you are risking a possible
fatal condition called hyperhydration or water poisoning. This could result into conditions such as heart failure,
stroke or brain damage.
When you reach the point that your body can not balance out your fluid levels, you are also disrupting the balance
of electrolytes. This is why sports drinks contain minerals such as salt to replenish electrolytes that are lost
through physical activity.
So a good take on water therapy is to take it in moderation. Always seek professional medical advice before
engaging in such "therapies" Who knows? You might just harm yourself in a blind effort to better yourself.
How to improve your health through water therapy
You never count how many glasses of water you drink everyday even though you've always known it should be 6-8. You
might think, with all the soda you gulp in a day, that you have all the liquid you need. But choosing water instead
of a soda cuts your calories and improves your body nourishment. This a follow-up on the article above.
Follow these ways on how you can get back into the water habit.
Take it with you.
People who are always on the run end up parched and exhausted. If you identify with this type of lifestyle, being
one who's always on the move, the best thing for you to do is to have a water bottle in your bag. You never know
when you need to rehydrate. Whether it's on a bus or on the elevator, ready water is a lifesaver.
What's your flavor?
Nowadays you can enjoy water in several varieties. If you don't like the kind you can buy at the grocery store, you
can opt for a more natural flavored water by adding a squirt of lemon juice or one-quarter cup of 100 percent fruit
juice, with flavor depending on your taste buds.
Conscious effort.
Going for a glass of water instead of a soda is so hard to do especially when you dine out where you get a free
soda to go with your ordered meal. To lessen the need for soda, ask for a glass of water so you can drink half and
half.
Water on your bedside.
Not all people do this, but maybe they should. Bringing with you a glass of water when you're off to bed is another
way to ensure you get enough before the day ends. Sometimes in the middle of the night you wake up coughing and
with a dry throat especially during winter when your heater is on all day.
The glass of water on your bedside will save you from getting up in the middle of your sleep.
